Commitment to Students and Their Learning
Accomplished mathematics teachers
acknowledge and value the individuality and worth of each student,
believe that all students
can learn and
use significant mathematics, and demonstrate these beliefs in their
practice.
Reflection on the Standard
The mastery and appreciation of mathematics can no longer be limited
to a small segment of our society. In order for the United States to
maintain her technological and economic leadership, a populace well
versed in the fundamentals of advanced mathematics and problem solving
is crucial and indispensable. Regardless of their path in life, all
students can, and indeed must be given the opportunity to study mathematics
that is significant and relevant.
Rather than being a hindrance, the myriad interests and aspirations
that students bring into the classroom serves as a limitless source
of inspiration and fascination. Each student is unique and has a singularly
valuable contribution to make. It is the responsibility of the teacher
to nurture the individuality of each student, to celebrate his or her
intrinsic
worth, and to facilitate the exploration of appropriate and sophisticated
mathematics.
