Equity, Diversity, and Fairness
Accomplished mathematics teachers have high expectations for all students.
They ensure equal access to the mathematics curriculum; model and promote
behavior appropriate in a diverse society by showing respect and appreciation
for all students; and teach students to treat one another fairly and
with dignity.
Reflection on the Standard
The wellspring of the strength and vigor of our civilization, diversity
must be nurtured and celebrated if we are to continue as a free, open,
and democratic society. All educators, regardless of their subjects
and grade levels, have the responsibility of instilling in their students
both a respect for the differences that enrich us, and a love for the
common ideals around which our country is built.
As a subject which
humanity has sought to master since the dawn of time, mathematics
transcends the superficialities of gender, creed, and color, and
provides all who are willing to put forth a modest effort the opportunity
to
join a long line of luminaries from Euclid and Pythagoras to Newton
and Euler.
