The Art of Teaching
Accomplished mathematics teachers stimulate and
facilitate student learning by using a wide range of formats and procedures
and by assuming a variety
of roles to guide students’ learning of mathematics.
Reflection on the Standard
Like the writer with a meager vocabulary or the musician with a paltry
repertoire, the teacher comfortable with only one mode of instruction
is severely limited in his or her effectiveness. Humans absorb information
through many modes, and no single instructional technique is intrinsically
better than any others. Whether it be through whole-class instruction,
small group discussion, guided discovery, or independent practice,
the effective teacher must have the willingness to employ a variety
of tools, and the ability to choose the best one for the task at hand.
