Assessment
Accomplished mathematics teachers employ a range
of formal and informal assessment methods that are ongoing and embedded
to evaluate student
learning in light of well defined goals. They employ multiple methods
of assessmentincluding teacher-designed and external assessments,
where appropriateto diagnose learning; plan instruction; and provide
opportunities for students to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses
in order to revise, support, and extend their individual performance.
Reflection on the Standard
Indispensible links in the feedback cycle, assessments provide teachers
with the data needed to modify, adjust, and refine ongoing instruction.
They are the gauges and dials that measure the progress of both individuals
and classes.
Just as the status of an automobile cannot be accurately judged on
the basis of a single guage reading, so too the progress of a class
cannot be judged on the basis of a single type of assessment. The use
of a wide range of assessments from individual tests to group projects,
written reports, and informal interviews provides the practitioner
with a more holistic picture, and is the mark of the effective teacher.
