Reflection and Growth
Accomplished mathematics teachers regularly reflect on what they teach
and how they teach. They keep abreast of changes and learn new content
in mathematics and in mathematical pedagogy, continually seeking to improve
their knowledge and practice.
Personal Reflection on the Standard
Whether recorded formally in writing, or informally in one's mind, reflections
on one's teaching practice are an essential part of the growth and improvement
cycle. They allow a teacher to pause, collect his or her thoughts, and
critique the current state of his or her practiceto judge what
works and what does not. Regular self-assessments also provide the effective
teacher with a roadmap for professional development, as they plainly
reveal areas for growth and improvement.
