Families and Communities
Accomplished mathematics teachers support and promote
the involvement of families in their children’s education. They help varied communities
understand the role of mathematics and mathematics instruction in today’s
world, andto the extent possiblethey involve these communities
in the support of instruction.
Reflection on the Standard
Before first setting foot in a classroom, children have already learned
and absorbed much from their families that will determine the courses
of their lives. As these same children grow to adolescence and young
adulthood,
the
influence of their families, though sometimes less apparent,
remains strong. The interest and involvement of the parent of a twelfth
grader is no less important than that of the parent of a first grader,
though their roles may be quite different.
Education is a community enterprise, and the effective teacher will
do all that he or she can to articulate with families and enlist the
support of the wider community.
